For almost 20 years now, the Salzburg Passion Singing has been looking at the passion story of Jesus from different angles. In life, there are always encounters that are formative, that change thinking and acting and can thus give a new direction to a person's life.Such happens to the protagonists of this year's Passion Singing. Actually, they are mentioned only briefly and in passing in the Bible; only in apocryphal writings do they receive names: The two nameless thieves crucified to the left and right of Jesus became Gismas and Gesmas, the Roman "centurion under the cross" was later given the name "Longinus".Little is known about these marginal figures and yet, upon closer examination, interesting questions and aspects arise. Who were they? The fact that they were crucified suggests serious crimes for these two "fellow sufferers of Jesus" - publicly executed were insurgents, rebel leaders and the like. Was there a connection to Jesus beforehand? One fights against his fate, finds it difficult to accept and seeks the blame elsewhere, the other submits and tries to make the best of his predicament. Doesn't this describe "two souls in one breast", which we meet and deal with every day - once more in one direction, then again in the other? Also the Roman centurion Longinus experiences a fundamental change. Allegedly, he - having come to believe in Jesus at the crucifixion - became a Christian missionary from then on. Alfred Kröll from Ginzling - for many years a participant in the Salzburg Passion Singing and also in the Salzburg Shepherds' Advent takes on the role of the Roman centurion.
